The Story of Gin
Gin is made from juniper berries and a variety of other botanical ingredients. The origins of gin can be traced back to the Middle Ages, when juniper berries were used to flavor spirits as a way to mask the taste of poor quality alcohol.
The modern version of gin as we know it today originated in the Netherlands in the early 17th century. At this time, a distiller named Franciscus Sylvius is credited with creating a distilled spirit made from juniper berries and other botanicals, which he called “jenever.” Jenever became popular in the Netherlands and Belgium, and eventually made its way to England, where it was referred to as “Dutch gin.”
Gin became especially popular in England during the 18th and 19th centuries, and there were many different styles of gin being produced, including Old Tom gin, which was sweeter than London dry gin, and Plymouth gin, which was made in the city of Plymouth and had a distinctive flavor.
Today, gin is enjoyed all over the world and is made in a variety of styles, including London dry gin, which is made from a neutral grain spirit and is flavored with a mix of botanicals, including juniper, coriander, and angelica root. There are also many other styles of gin, such as flavored gin, which is made with additional natural flavors, and sloe gin, which is made with sloe berries.
