In 1997, amid a 30 year category decline, Trey Zoeller and his father Chet, a famed bourbon historian, founded Jefferson’s. They sought to create a high end bourbon that provided something different to what was available at that time whilst also tipping their hat to the great distilling tradition of Kentucky. In going against the grain, they were simply continuing a family legacy; Trey’s 8th generation grandmother was arrested in 1799 for the sale of illicit spirits. This is exemplified today their unique approach to whiskey blending and maturation. “In 1799, Marian McLain was arrested for distilling and selling whiskey without paying taxes. She didn’t do it to rebel, but as a war-widowed mother, she had to find a way to provide for her children. Marian McLain is my eighth-generation grandmother and the inspiration for Jefferson’s Bourbon. Now, on our 25th anniversary, my father and I are honored to share Marian’s spirit through this exceptionally bold and balanced blend. While we’re always searching for more details of her life, we do know that Marian’s arrest made her one of the first women on record for selling whiskey in America. It’s her spirit and bravery that inspired me and my father to create Jefferson’s Bourbon.” - Trey Zoeller, Founder
